The Midway Story
Looking for a better work and family balanced life, Isaac Stout, once dairy farmer of Indiana for over 6 years, moved down to NC the year of 1984. Isaac, along with his family of 7, moved into a rental home off Hampton Rd. on the northern side of Davidson County as Isaac began work for Ed Kelly’s Service Center where he gained his experience in appliance repair. After working nearly 4 years there, Isaac was noticed as one of the highest profit-making technicians. But to his dismay, Isaac was really bothered by his inability to offer cheaper service affordable to customers, which later sparked his entrepreneurial idea of starting his own appliance repair company.
Isaac realized how he could service the community more efficiently but the cost of owning a business, aside from just the monetary obligations, wasn’t just right for his young and growing family of 7. However, rumors began spreading of Isaac’s thoughts of starting an appliance repair business of his own and was threatened his job. The Service Center essentially suggested a non-compete clause but Isaac denied and lost his job.
On a whim, Isaac sent out flyer advertisements to around 600 homes on the rural route on Norman Shoaf Road. He hung the flyers in local businesses. He worried himself during all hours of the night about how he was going to make enough money to provide for such a large family, until one night, he told God that he was willing to do any work that God would provide for him. Putting all his faith and trust in the Lord to protect and carry him through, God’s peace and assurance halted the restless nights and blessed the start of Midway Appliance Service.
It took another laborious 4 years for Isaac and his new business to become established with a steady income. Word had spread that Isaac provided prompt, complete, and honest service. But as Midway Appliance kept growing, so did the need for employees. Along the years, Isaac hired 3 of his 5 brothers along with his wife and sister-in-law, making this a true family-owned and operated business. Midway Appliance still honors the service that Jim, Joe, Jesse, Susie, Becky and others have poured into along with Isaac to help establish Midway Appliance and the trust of its’ loyal customers.
Fast forward a few years to 2013; nephew, Sam Grossoehme had just graduated high school and expressed an interest in learning how to repair appliances. Sam moved to North Carolina to live with Isaac and Becky in their basement as he learned the ins and out of the industry. Because of how quickly Sam was learning, older Isaac saw potential in Sam taking over ownership of the business and keeping loyal customers happy.
Older age led Isaac’s brothers to move out of NC to enjoy their retirement in 2015 so Sam’s dad, John Grossoehme moved down in 2016 to help with the business. Sam purchased the business from Isaac Stout August 2016. Sam’s mom, Kimberley started answering the business phone and office work in 2016 too.
To celebrate years of hard work, retirement and their 50th wedding anniversary, original owners, Isaac and Becky Stout, traveled across country more than 9,000 miles through 21 different states!
Today, Sam Grossoehme & father, John, proudly enjoy repairing appliances with an expanded service area. Sam loves hearing stories of is great Uncle Isaac’s early Midway Appliance years and strives to ALWAYS provide dependable, honest, and fair service to such a loyal community.
